Volunteers

We will need a large commitment from community volunteers to ensure that the VACPC is a safe and welcoming space for community members. Just like the eight other CPCs in Vancouver, our Centre cannot run without volunteers to assist us. Therefore, our Coordinator will spend a large amount of his time in the next few months recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers. Once we have enough volunteers to safely operate the Centre, we will open our doors for community members to drop in or come for specific activities. We will need volunteers to help with everything from greeting visitors, to office work, to developing workshops and programs. Volunteer opportunities will include helping with various duties such as:

• Administrative duties including typing, filing, checking messages, etc
• Developing and/or supervising programs or initiatives
• Greeting visitors, answering phones, or tidying the office
• Website development and updates
• Developing and writing newsletters
• Developing marketing materials and strategies for fundraising
• Researching resource materials
• Participating in justice and safety projects throughout the community, such as graffiti cleanup, safety checks, cleanups, speed watch, or block watch
• Developing and/or facilitating workshops on cross-cultural training for the VPD and others, arrest procedures, your rights when being questions or detained by police, safety issues, engaging youth in community activities, and others

Once we have our volunteer manual and recruitment and training process finalized, we will be doing a wide-spread recruitment campaign to ensure we are attracting the best volunteers possible to help run this important community resource. Keep an eye out for volunteer postings, which will also be posted on our website. All volunteers must have a criminal record check before volunteering for the VACPC. If you would like to volunteer for the VACPC, please visit our office to speak with our Coordinator. If the VACPC is a good fit for you to volunteer, we will provide you with a letter to bring with you to the VPD. This letter will explain who you are volunteering for, and will let the VPD know that there should be no charge. Please see below to find out more about criminal record checks.
